The club started like any other club, a bunch of gear heads got together to show everyone what we had built and, in this case, it was plastic models cars. This is what every kid built back in the 50’s and 60’s.
All the kids grew up to be adults… or did we?
The kids of yesteryear still build models today, and back in March of 1990 we all got together to have a Show & Tell at our favorite hobby shop: in this case, it was Smitty’s Hobby Shop in Kettering, Ohio. We talked and we showed our models and we decided to start a model club. This is how the CARBS Model Club got started. It was the brain-child of Barry Payne to honor his fallen friend ‘Jerry G. Kathe’ who had passed away the year before. Barry has been the president of the club from the beginning and it was handed to me to carry on the honor of keeping this club together. I have been president of the CARBS for 18 years or so and I have enjoyed everything about this hobby.
Over the years we have had a lot of members who have come and gone and some has even left us before their time. The CARBS Model Club will use this site to HONOR them and to let the model car world know that we are still around. We have a lot of very good builders in this club, some are well known, and some are new to this world. Take time to read their BIOs and look at some of their builds that will be shown here from time to time. If you'd like to contact them, their e-mail will be shown in their BIO. If you need to know anything else about the CARBS, feel free to ask me.
I would also like to honor a person who always went out of their way to make the CARBS feel wanted in the model world and that person is DON SMITH of Smitty’s Hobby Shop in Kettering, Ohio. We, as the model world, lost Don last year, and he will surely be missed by all.
Hope you enjoy this site and if you know our model club, then you know we welcome all model builders in the auto world and feel free to join us at our meeting.
Thanks
Vern Heizer, Jr.
Former President
We are still unable to hold our monthly meeting at the church. Vern is willing to hold the July meeting at his home. We will not have a show 'n tell as part of it. Instead, we will have Swap Meet. Bring something to sell or trade. Also, bring your own chair. Hope to see you there.
Barry L. Payne
President
